Important Information
Overview
Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TSVIs) work with children who are diagnosed by an eye doctor to have a visual impairment. The Ministry of Education sets the criteria for Designation E-Visual Impairment. Visual impairment exists on a continuum from low vision to no vision. The visual acuity measure for low vision is 20/70 or worse in the best eye, with correction. Legally blind is 20/200 or worse in the best eye, with correction. Other functional behaviours can co-exist with visual impairment. A person may have an additional physical and/or intellectual challenge. A person diagnosed by an eye doctor as visually impaired and a hearing professional as deaf or hard of hearing, meets criteria for Designation B-Deafblind. Specialized resources are available to support these students. Guidance can be through a TSVI or TDHH (Teacher of Students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The resources shared in this webpage are to support those who work with children who have a visual impairment. Some resources are to support children who experience visual challenges and do not have a diagnosed visual impairment that meets the Ministry’s criteria for Designation E.
