QR Codes

QR Codes, or Quick Read Codes, are very simply a way to get to internet-stored information quickly.  They shorten a URL addresses.   You don’t need a QR code if you are using a device because you simply click a link.  But if you have any kind of printed material, the last thing you want is to type in a long address to view a link.   That’s where a @QR code comes into play.

1. Here’s an address to the Learn 71 Homepage: https://learn71.ca/

2.  And this one is a QR code to the same page:

QR Codes in Education is a presentation that was made at the CSSE Congress 2013 conference at U-Vic.   It reflects the work done by a group of teachers in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. This group has been looking at new ways to communicate academic and socio-emotional progress to family members.  QR codes, or quick link codes, provide a shortcut to web-based examples.

QR code Fluency lesson The information in this link will provide step by step instructions to use QR codes as a means to increase fluency levels and capture audio files of students reading picture books.  The QR codes are placed on the back of these library books.  When these books are checked out of the library, the code may be scanned using an iPhone or iPad, and the voice of a child reading this book will be heard!  This lesson is infused with assessment for learning strategies.  Kara Dawson, Lynn Swift, Debbie Nelson and I were always impressed by the levels of engagement we saw in students as we shared this work across the Comox Valley.

How to create QR codes and save voice recordings in My Site

QR Code peer and self assessment

After co-creating criteria in class (What is fluency?  How does someone read fluently?  What does fluent reading sound like?), Simon and Kaden share their understanding about what’s working and what’s next as they practice reading their book.

With lots of positive feedback from a partner, the class was ready to record themselves reading a book of their choice.  From there, their audio recordings were converted into a s QR Code.  A QR code was placed on the back cover of the books read by children (see image below).  By scanning the QR codes placed on books, listeners can hear the wonderful voices of students sharing their book!
