The struggle is part of the process, and when you finally succeed, it feels way more rewarding. The harder it is, the sweeter the win! So don\u2019t shy away from the tough stuff in your education\u2014it\u2019s how you grow stronger and smarter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Teachers are excited for students to learn how to use AI wisely. Your high school classes can help you build the skills needed to use AI effectively and responsibly. Think of it this way: learning basic skills in school is like learning to control the volume, balance the sound, and choose the right tracks before<\/em> you DJ a party. Without those basics, the music doesn\u2019t flow, and the crowd won\u2019t enjoy it.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

AI can boost your ideas, but you need to stay in control. High school helps you learn to think critically and understand the world\u2014skills AI depends on. Knowing the basics helps you ask smarter questions and check AI\u2019s answers, making it work for you<\/strong><\/em>.

High school isn\u2019t perfect of course, but if you look for ways to build your skills, even in an imperfect system, you\u2019re setting yourself up for success!<\/span><\/p>\n

Part 2.\u00a0 Core Competencies<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

By now you have probably heard of the Core Competencies<\/a> in British Columbia\u2019s education.\u00a0 Think of these Core Competencies as essential life skills, not specific subjects like \u201clearn French\u201d or \u201cwrite an essay.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 These skills will help you succeed in whatever life paths you choose!<\/span><\/p>\n

There are three main Core Competencies.\u00a0 They are:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Communication<\/strong> Imagine rocking group projects, speaking confidently to adults, and avoiding misunderstandings with friends. Communication means sharing your ideas clearly and listening well. It takes practice, but it leads to better relationships now and future success in life and work.

Thinking<\/strong><\/span>
\n Want to ace problem-solving, come up with genius ideas, or win debates? Thinking skills\u2014creative, critical, and reflective\u2014are your secret weapons. In school, they help with tricky assignments and exams. In life, they\u2019re the tools for innovation, navigating big decisions, and standing out in a world full of challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Personal and Social<\/strong><\/span>
\n Ever wanted to handle stress better, understand your friends, or make a real impact? Personal and Social skills teach self-awareness, empathy, and responsibility. Right now, they help you balance life and school. In the future, they\u2019re your guide to being a leader, a change maker, and your best self.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the massive expansion of AI, experts predict three types of people are emerging:<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span>Those who ignore<\/em><\/strong> AI\u00a0 tools, missing opportunities to enhance their skills.<\/span><\/td>\n\"\"<\/span>Those who over-rely<\/em><\/strong> on them, losing creativity, skepticism, and the ability to express their ideas.<\/span><\/td>\n\"\"<\/span>Those who use AI wisely<\/em><\/strong> to expand their skills and abilities.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n

So, learn to wield AI wisely and it will be a great ally<\/em><\/strong> in your learning.<\/span><\/p>\n

So how<\/em><\/strong> do you use AI wisely exactly?<\/span><\/p>\n

Think of tools like ChatGPT, Quillbot, Flexi, and Grammarly as just that\u2014tools. Tools can assist, but their impact depends on the user. A hammer can build or destroy a house. Similarly, fire can cook food and rejuvenate forests or devastate homes and entire communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Think about how you use AI. Every time you interact with it, you\u2019re telling AI what you want it to be! Use AI to build skills and create, and you\u2019re shaping a future where AI supports learning. But if you rely on it to skip thinking, you\u2019re voting for a world where AI replaces human creativity. Choose wisely!<\/span><\/p>\n

When we talk about AI here, we mean general AIs like ChatGPT, Claude, or CoPilot. There are hundreds of others, some very specific and not meant for schoolwork. For example, asking a game character chatbot for homework help or life advice isn\u2019t using AI wisely!<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps you are even unaware that there are<\/em><\/strong> responsible and irresponsible ways to use AI!\u00a0 Here is an example of each\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Think of the difference between these two prompts for an AI tool.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prompt 1)<\/strong>\u00a0 I need an essay about _______.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prompt 2)\u00a0<\/strong> I am a 17-year-old high school student learning about _____________.\u00a0 I am supposed to write an essay about it, but I need some help.\u00a0 I know a few things about it, but I am not totally sure that I am well enough informed.\u00a0 Can you ask me some questions about ________?\u00a0 Here is the essay question that my teacher provided:\u00a0 \u201c _________ ______________\u201d.\u00a0 I want you to support my learning and my thinking, so, one at a time, ask me some questions that will focus my thinking.\u00a0 And limit your questions to 15 words each.<\/span><\/p>\n

Part 4 – Prompt Craft<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

The various instructions (prompts) that we put into different AI\u2019s are called prompt craft.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Probably the most important inclusions in your AI prompts need to demonstrate that you have a desire to learn, grow, apply effort, and that you want AI to support you in that.\u00a0 Moving forward, keep the following prompt handy and evolve it to reflect your specific class, your age, and your assignments, etc<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is a prompt that you can use anytime!\u00a0 Feel free to copy and past it and fill in the blanks for your specific purpose:<\/span><\/p>\n

You are a highly skilled tutor who knows exactly how to generate deep and meaningful learning in your students.\u00a0 The class I am working on is ___________ , and I need to do an assignment about _______________.\u00a0 Other specifics of the assignment include _________________.\u00a0\u00a0 What I\u2019m struggling with is ____________________. \u00a0\u00a0Can you act as my tutor and ask me questions to help explore my understanding of this issue?\u00a0 Use language that a _______ year old understands and limit your responses to ____(# of words)__________.\u00a0 <\/u>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Please act as my tutor<\/strong> by helping me learn the concepts of how the scientific method works. Ask me simple questions only and limit them to 15 words each.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. I am unsure how to tell if a character in a short story is static or dynamic. Without giving me a direct answer, (again, please act as a tutor might) ask me questions that will help me understand this concept.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. I am a 16-year-old ESL student. My teacher keeps giving me low grades and says my writing is not sophisticated enough. What are some writing tips that you can give me so I can improve my writing? Please limit your responses to 50 words each.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. I am a 16-year-old high school student in social studies 10 who would like to debate<\/em><\/strong> you on whether Canada should increase or decrease the voting age.\u00a0 I want you to take the side of increasing the age.\u00a0 I will take the side of decreasing the age.\u00a0 Please limit your responses to 50 words at a time, and please use relatively simple language that I can understand.\u00a0 You can go first.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/section>\n
