School-Wide Writes ~ a Suggested Protocol

The following document offers a suggested sequence to orchestrate a school-wide write.  Before students write, picture books are read aloud to model the personal narrative genre in which they will be asked to write. If available, Knucklehead by Jon Scieszka is perfect! A group activity gets students thinking about the characteristics of quality writing in order to bring all their previous learning forward in a collective way. This document also contains assessment information and an example of  a class profile that informs instruction for the months to come.
