The Doubling Rule

When do you double the last consonant in a one syllable word when adding a suffix?

Look at the base word.

  1. Does the base word end with a vowel – consonant (ie sad, drop and fit)?
  2. Does the suffix start with a vowel?

If your answer is yes to both questions, then you double the consonant before adding the suffix.

(ie sadden, dropping and fittest)
