Number Talks & Image Talks

Math talking tasks are great for warm-ups and daily numeracy routines. Students look at images and brainstorm with prompts. There are a range of access points, which develops growth mindset and self-efficacy in math.

3-Act Tasks (Three Act Task Explained)

These are 30-60 minute activities you can do to develop students’ observation, questioning, and estimating skills, as well as skills for calculating and solving real-life situational problems. They have 3 “Acts” with hints, photos, videos and reveals. Most videos include very few words in English, so they can be easily adapted for French Immersion, and the discussions help boost students’ oral French skills.

Array-Bow of Colours: Students estimate how many skittles are in a jar, using estimates per package.
All Aboard: Students estimate how long it will take for a train to pass. (All Aboard Guiding Worksheet)
43 Chicken Nuggets: (Gr 4-6) Students figure out how to use menu options to order 43 chicken nuggets. Pay attention to worksheet instructions for this one, as you need to pause the video at specific places.
Sugar Packets: Students discover how many sugar packets are in a 20oz bottle of soda. (Sugar Packets Teacher Guide)
Deep Freeze with an Extension (Gr7): Students estimate negative temperatures (integers) and convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with an Extension (Gr 6-7): Students estimate how many cups a Youtuber ate, then how much it cost and how much tax would be (Original 3-Act Task)

Problem of the Week/Problème de la semaine

POTW is a daily math problem, mostly based on real-life situations, released by the University of Waterloo Centre for Excellence in Mathematics each week. Here are some examples of POTW focusing on number sense. These are great questions to use for Vertical Non-permanent Surfaces (i.e. collaborative problem solving using whiteboards around the classroom). Each link includes the answer key. Problem A (Grade 4) in French

Quel nombre suis-je? – using place value and multiplication of 10 and 100 (p. 117-119)
Clés pour décoder des messages secrets – using a code to spell words (p. 119-120)
L’addition et la soustraction – applying addition and subtraction to discover and “math”gic trick (p. 124-125)
Sortie au théâtre – planning the number of buses needed for a field trip (p. 40-41)
Mesurez-moi – comparing growth at different ages (p. 48-49)

Problem B (Grade 5/6) in French

Quand est-ce qu’on arrive? – converting Astronomical Units to calculate the distance and time from earth to other planets (p. 7-8)
Ce puzzle a votre nombre! – solve many operations to make a crossword (p. 19-20)
C’est à peu près ça – finding numbers that will fit in blanks to meet the criteria for the sum (p. 21-23)

Other Innovative Computational Fluency Activities

Multiplication by Heart by Mathigon and Math for Love is an interactive visual flashcard activity that shows numbers in groupings to help students visualize the math fact.

Using Bead Strings to represent multiplicative reasoning and relationships to 100 (Video with Shelley Gray)

The Open Number Line is a measurement model where students may represent strategies and computational thinking beyond 100 on an interactive online number line.

Partial Product Finder allows multiplication to 50 X 50 to be represented as a rectangle or several rectangles, helping students develop strategies for multiplication of larger numbers. (e.g. 26 x 15 = (20 + 6) x (15 + 5).

Steve Wyborney Multiplication Course (for educators or students) is a series of very short Youtube videos that deepens learning about what multiplication is and offers many strategies for multiplying
